What is DIR?

Ok everyone. I am a new diver certified since last May and got my advanced certification in October but it took being a part of this board to hear abou this thing called DIR. I finally found out what the DIR stood for but still I am still confused as to what it is.

I have read qsacha's thread and saw there was a book about it and that some of you were talking about gear?

I am intrgued and if it means improving skills then I want to know more about it.

It is probably a question asked before on this board but any help is appreciated. What is DIR? Why should I be a part of it? :emabarr:
