I'm a Fish!
Hey everyone I am looking into making my own wheeleez. I am not to sure what type of material to use(pvc, emt, or wood). Also what type of tires do you use? I think this might of been a topic before but hey why not see if there are any new ideas out there. Thanks

I just made the cart found Here with some slight modifications.

I used 1-1/4" pvc. I left out the "kick stand", and added some 3/4" posts that fit into my scupper holes (so I don't have to strap it).
Seems to work pretty well, I'm taking it to the Venice Turkey Fry, so I'll know soo how it does on beach sand.

You want to make sure that you use the wide sand tires.

Here is my yak cart 1 1/4" pvc, tie down straps & wheelez tires. BTW the tires are made of polyeurathane. I tried finding a cheaper tire source, without much success. These are soft 6" wide sand tires. My cart is a bit beefier than the other DIY, and not a take- down, but I haul my yak fully loaded with my dive gear.

What type of wheels does everyone use? I know moatmans were a little pricey however they are nice.

I know the sand tires are pricey but, if you're going to be putting in & out off the beach, they are what you want. ( You'll just end up buying them eventually.)

I can attest to this. I had to get cheap tires, and they cut right into the sand.

I simply purchased a set of the Wheelez with the fat tires, and I like how they disassemble and fold up in about 20 seconds to store in my front hatch.

I originally had a cart with the skinny tires. It worked okay until they did a beach renourishment project out at Boca. The tires just dug right into the sand, especially if I had the boat loaded with gear. So, I looked into just buying the tires & adapting the cart frame that I already had. Well it didn't take long to discover that the major part of the cost was the tires! For less than $20.00 more, I went ahead & got the frame that was made for the tires. Being of the female persuasion & therfore, not being very handy with construction projects, it was worth it for me.

I used a couple of wheelbarrow tires (pnuematic) I got at Ace hardware and a long threaded rod from the same place and put a piece of PVC on the rod between the tires. With a bungee to hold kayak on it works fine and cost a hell of lot less then the store bought ones. Have been toying with the idea of adding two uprights to the PVC to put thru the scupper holes and eliminate the bungee - maybe someday!!
