I've never seen a PADI manual that could be described as "cutting edge" - usually, they're more like, "Dick and Jane go diving" :)

Compared to other manuals, they are actually quite well put together. If everything in the manual was covered properly and the student truly evaluated on proper presentation of the skills ... I better stop before I get further down that path ..

I refused to either purchase or watch the Rescue Diver and Divemaster ones since I had the option...the Open Water one was enough to make me almost gouge my eyes out.

Try teaching. After the first 40 times the open water DVD makes you want to gouge someone elses eyes out. And its really sad when you even know the russian script for it :(

I must admit if i ever do hear someone in real life going "Yee Haa high five" i'm likely to want to stab them in the face.

I don't mean to go off topic, but reading posts it would seem that the PADI MSD is not worth getting. I am OW with PADI. I love diving and have thought about doing something professionally when I am both more confident and competant in my abilities. do I need to change agencies to get respected certs/ratings if I ever decide to pursue teaching/instructing of scuba diving? again I am sorry for the off topic post. I do want to get nitrox, PPB, photo, and don't think I would take the boat or naturalist(at least not right away).

Here's your boat diving course:

Put on fins. Put reg in mouth. Face water, take a big step off the side and gravity will take care of the rest.

BAM! Just saved you some money!

You forgot something, they need to find the boat get back onboard.:rofl3:

Thats the test to see if they pass or not.

Depends where they are in the world. Here they just send up their delayed SMB and the boat comes to them :)

(or a ruthless instructor could sell them an U/W nav course)

PADI MSD is NOT a qualification. Its merely a card you pay money for after doing other things - its not a course, nothing is taught its the only thing where literally you are paying for a card. It doesn't allow you to go deeper, longer or do anything new either.

If you want to do the specialities then by all means do them and learn something (if you pick sensible ones). However after doing those getting MSD is worthless - save the money and go for a dive or 2 instead. You still have exactly the same level of training, you just dont have a worthless plastic card.

The msd is worth getting. Its like anything else in life though if some one feels it is not worth it then they will come up with every excuse to why its not worth it. Treat both sides as what they trully are "Opinions" Me personally I love the rating as it denotes achievement. Others prefer just to be able to dive and brag of how they teach. I respect all sides personally but do recommend going for your MSD.
