Dive center vs. certification agency profit from courses

I've wondered this for a while now: when a dive shop sells a course (through PADI, SSI, or NAUI, to keep it simple), how much of the total cost goes to the dive shop and how much goes to the certification agency? Is it different for the OW certifications vs. speciality courses? Just curious, I...

    Nitrox mixes above 40%?

Hm...it really seems that the original question I posted now has nothing to do with the discussion that's been going on :-P Perhaps I should try to summarize the points: 0) Nitrox mixes with O2 above 40% are used for speeding deco, and some tec divers allow a PO2 of 1.6 to speed deco. 1) Some...

    Always wondered this about CCRs

Hi all, I figure that this question is far too basic and "just for general info", so I posted it here instead of to the rebreather forum. In light of the recent discussion in the advanced Nitrox thread, I've always been wondering: CCRs apparently don't tell you that they are working wrong, is...

    Nitrox mixes above 40%?

Neat. So I guess the "advanced nitrox" courses (well into my future...far into my future :-P ) are essentially decompression courses? MIKE

    Nitrox mixes above 40%?

Howdy, I'm just taking the SSI nitrox course now and they mention that EAN40 is the highest they will talk about in the rec course. Just wondering, why would a tec diver use more than 40%? Is it just for decompression, or would it be used in, say, a shallow cave dive to increase limits? MIKE

Wanted : Dive buddy in the KW area

I'm in Guelph and up for diving. @mikepeluso: we've been at Gulliver's once or twice together. I've got a (very small!) car that can probably handle two people and dive equipment. MIKE

Gullivers Lake Park July 2012 Video Report

For the record, the grey "fog" is what happens when colder water meets the warmer water. Put your hand into the fog and you'll notice it's much colder, probably this is where the springs come up to interact with the water.

Beyond 130 feet: always a deco dive?

So...would it be correct to say that a tec diver plans a deeper dive much more carefully, prints tables specific to the dive/gas profile, and uses the computer only as backup?

Beyond 130 feet: always a deco dive?

Out of curiosity, do most computers handle going beyond the NDL and dealing with deco, or are those a sort of emergency mode that the computer really shouldn't be in? Are there specific tech computers that are designed for deco?

Beyond 130 feet: always a deco dive?

And I wonder what it meant that a dive was "very unsuitable". how does that differ from an "unsuitable" dive?

Beyond 130 feet: always a deco dive?

haha well I just wanted to be clear that I wasn't trying to ask a stupid question :-P

Beyond 130 feet: always a deco dive?

Yes, I realize that my first question and my clarification were different, sorry about that. Thanks for the replies! MIKE

Beyond 130 feet: always a deco dive?

But that wasn't the point of my post. I'm sensing that what I'm asking and what has been answered are very different questions. Let me rephrase: WHY do some divers who are only trained recreationally go deeper than 130 feet? I realize now from the answers that the answer is "because they are...

Beyond 130 feet: always a deco dive?

So then how DO you get trained to go beyond the recreational depth limits? What experience do people have before they contemplate doing so?

Beyond 130 feet: always a deco dive?

Just wondering about this: if you dive with a computer to beyond 130 feet, will you ALWAYS be in a decompression situation? Well, I guess that's worded badly. Let's try this: "recreational divers plan all dives to be no stop dives". Does that mean that beyond 130 feet, you will always have...

    Diving clubs around Guelph?

Yeah, definitely each shop has a community attached to it. I've been diving out at Gulliver's with Groundhog divers lately, and that has been awesome. :-P I only wish I had remembered that Kitchener-Waterloo existed before getting my OW cert. I had to drive all the way out to Mississauga to...

    Semi closed rebreathers?

Great replies, and a lot to think about. Thanks everyone!

Why are some tanks more expensive?

Oh I see, so it's the valve, and not really the tank, that changes the price? If so, that would make a LOT more sense... MIKE

Why are some tanks more expensive?

I'm talking about two comparable (apparently?) 80L Al tanks, for example. What makes one more expensive than the other? Consider this: Buy Sherwood 80 Cubic Foot [cf] aluminum tank AC80 with reviews at scuba.com And compare it to this: Buy XS Scuba 80 Cubic Foot [cf] aluminum tank AL80...

    Semi closed rebreathers?

Howdy all, I realize that this IS a rebreather topic, so might be a better fit in the rebreather diving forum, but it's probably too basic for that forum, so here we go: I've heard of "semi-closed rebreathers", and apparently they are a lot easier to use than CCRs, require less training, but...
