Do you really think people believe that these compartments exist in the physical world rather than being mental constructs?

Some might be that stupid, but I doubt it. But some still think of it as the big "truth" of decompression.

Actually I believe it has, the work was done by Dr. Arthur Bacharat, then of NAMRI in Bethesda (I think that Art retired to Taos and has a bookstore there). They saturatated a group of Marines (as he tells it, thereby avoiding the Human Subjects Committee) on radioactively tagged Nitrogen and followed it. I have not seen the paper. I think the actual work was done at Laurence Livermore under a DARPA contract (memory's a bit sketchy there, this was one conversation "twenty years ago").
