Thank you so much for all your help!
One more question: is it too ambitious for a novice to want to dive in the cenotes?
And same question about diving ops and Christmas applies here :)

Probably yes. You need excellent buoyancy control and if memory serves me well, the one time I went over to the mainland to do so (haven't been back since I didn't think it was all that much fun), the dive op wanted a minimum number of dives before they would take you.

In my opinion, yes. The cenotes are overhead environments a lot of the time where a panicky diver cannot get directly to the surface. There is also a lot of silt that can take a very long time to settle out if a diver without good buoyancy control kicks it up.

Do not even consider cenotes yet. When you do...avoid Chac Mool.

If you hire a private divemaster on your first day, mention that you want to try a suitable swim through. Let him/her assess your readiness to try those. Once you are comfortable with those and gain additional experience in buoyancy control and handling underwater issues, then you can consider a cenote trip.

If you do try swim throughs without a private divemaster, do not be the last one. Either have the divemaster be your notional buddy or see if an experienced diver can mentor you.

Am I the only one that thinks, even on vacation, you should not be making people work on Christmas? Just like all these stores making people come in and work on Thanksgiving, it just seems wrong and something I will never support. People in the every industry, even the vacation industry, deserve Christmas off. Don't be part of the problem.

And yes I will be in Coz over Christmas and no I will not be shopping, diving, going to a restaurant, or in any other way supporting anyone making their employees work that day.

Why? Because it's a religious holiday when religious people worship Santa Claus? Or a secular holiday where people worship commercialism?

What about the employees that only get paid when they work? Should they be forced to take a cut in their paychecks because you don't support anyone "making" them work?

What about emergency services? Should nurses and doctors not be forced to work on Christmas because the emergency patients certainly will understand if they have to postpone treatment for a day? Let the police take the day off because all the criminals will also not be forced to work on Christmas, therefore there won't be any crime? Pray that all the infrastructure, like electricity, water, and communications, all run smoothly unattended throughout the day?

Likewise, no one should be forced to work graveyard shifts or Sundays (or Saturdays or Mondays). Heck, no one should be forced to work at all. We can all live happily unemployed in our worker-free utopia, supping on manna from Heaven and playing with our toys delivered by Santa Claus, the only guy who has to work on Christmas Day. He never gets the day off and we worship him, so why should anyone else?

Most of the Mexicans care more about the eve of the 24th.
I have no problem diving on the 25th. If they want to work. Let them.
Christmas Day gets Christmas tips.

I am a thankful they work the 25th, and I show my appreciation.

Make sure not to run any of the utilities (who run skeleton crews to make sure there are no problems) in your house (I'm going to have to assume you aren't in a hotel where staff have to work) or to watch any TV or listen to the radio (where people have to work to provide these broadcasts).

I have no problem with dive ops closing on christmas. But "in any other way supporting anyone making their employees work" is silly- there are LOTS of people who have to work holidays, and not all of them are essential services.

It would be interesting to know how dive shop employees feel about this. Perhaps they use volunteers. I have worked holidays in previous jobs but would prefer that most US stores be closed on Thanksgiving. I can shop for groceries the day before and wait until Friday for those sales (which I avoid anyway).
