these buzzed past me while diving whitsunday islands GBR, 50-60 cm (aprox) in 15m of water. any idea what they are?

Looks a lot like a bluefin trevally, but I can't tell from the colors on the picture. Definitively a Jack of some sort.
 
Definitely a trevally, yup. My best guess is Carangoides gymostethus.

It's got the weird head-indentation, hint of yellow on the caudal fins, the tiny spots, and very faint vertical bands.
