Basically what TSandM said. If you don't know how to swim, that should be first! Get used to having your face in the water. Learn how to use your snorkel and clear your mask.
Become comfortable in the water with your gear... and without it. When you are comfortable snorkeling and freediving, the transfer of skills to scuba will be easier.

Scuba is easy when nothing goes wrong... the hard part is knowing what to do and reacting properly when something does go wrong. Get some snorkeling and freedive experience and save your money for classes. The lake will still be there after you get certified. :)
