Most FFM divers will carry a spare half mask in their BCD pocket. I've spoken to many divers that do not carry one because they can ascend without it. This is completely up to the individual diver and comfort level.

You can see how to doff your FFM underwater, switch to safe 2nd, don and clear half mask -- as well as the reverse on our website here : Full Face Mask Training Videos | Ocean Technology Systems The video is called "Doff and Don Guardian FFM Underwater"

With a little practice you can gain the muscle memory needed to complete the drill and in a small amount of time.

This is a good question as becoming comfortable with emergency drills is extremely important. The good part is, the remedy for your question is a small amount of practice and getting to know your gear.

Hope this helps!

Sqeezing a spare mask in pockets with 10 lb. weights behind them may not work. If necessary I suppose one could find a way to clip it somewhere.

The OP can't seal his mouth, which may slightly complicate the use of a half mask...

How about holding a hand around his lips when using the standard reg? Obviously you wouldn't want to do this for an entire dive, but assuming the dive gets turned if the primary full mask fails, he could swaps to a backup half-mask and standard reg it would likely be enough to get to the surface. Certainly not ideal though...
