Like I said before 10 day Dive Masters are a joke, and these poor people who spend there money on lets see how fast we can do this course will never be employed in the industry. Once finished our Dive masters can run the boat on there own, can read a tide chart, Know the dive site inside out were they are going to lead dives, and are capable of even passing the dive master exams without being given the answers.
Being a DM is not just about getting the card its about being a needed useful professional team member.
Well said seaduction. In my mind any proffesional diving qualification done under such circumstances is worthless.
But the unfortunate side to that is once the card is issued it puts those that have learned very little on the same level as those that have much more experience.
No doubt as you suggest if someone who has done a 10 day (or less) DM course and actually manage to secure employment at a good shop, they will soon be found out. But maybe some of the less reputable shops who may employ such people are those that seem to be getting all the complaints.
Maybe it is the system that is wrong for allowing such courses to take place? Maybe the DM course, being a proffesional qualification which certifies divers to take care of paying customers, could benefit from some sort of external moderation.
