Two plaques sounds even better. She had a LOT of friends and dive buddies. :D

I vividly remember having a conversation with Kristina about Monastery and being out of towner I opted not to dive there. I am not doing the shore entry there for sure. Either way, please keep me posted and let me know who to send $ towards the plaque(s) to.

What do you guys think it is the cost? If it is not too much perhaps do both? I was thinking of contributing $50 but will add more if we need two.
I think the cost is mostly going to be materials. ZKY already offered his labor and if needed I am sure someone else on this board with necessary tooling would offer a little time for a good cause. :)

Now if it is made out of 1/2 copper that isn't going to be cheap! Even still it shouldn't come to much money if even a few share the costs.

I don't think it has to be 1/2" thick, 1/4" would even be fine or even 3/16".
My idea is to flush mount it into the concrete by building a form, laying the plaque face down at the bottom of the mould and then pouring the concrete in.
When removed from the mould the plaque would be embedded flush.
The lettering would need to be no smaller than 1/2" characters. That means if it's upper and lower case the lower case can be no smaller than 1/2". The plotter can cut rubberized sand blast stencil only so small.
And then there's the question of do you guys want the lettering raised and the blank space etched away, or do you want the lettering etched in. What ever is picked the lettering needs to be fairly large which means the message will need to kept somewhat short and to the point.

Lets not worry about any of the money stuff right now. Right now lets just nail down a plan. I will look into obtaining the copper plate and I'll talk to my computer sign guy about the sand blast stencil. The other option would be to have a piece of copper or bronze casted but I'd imagine that would be astronomical. However with enough people contributing it may not be that bad. I'll look into that as well.
You guys need to get the verbage written out before much else happens. That will dictate how big the plaque needs to be which will let me know what size remnant I need to be looking for, and a lot of other technicalities.

I think Kristina would be tickled pink if she knew what we were up to.
She probably already knows.

Jim and I talked about the location a bit tonight and we both agree that we'll be there to place the memorial wherever it is decided. But at monastery we probably wont visit it since we just don't dive that site.

I bet drawing any lettering up in CAD wouldn't be too hard, and someone with a CNC could cut the metal either direction, meaning raised or sunk lettering.

The clear winner for longevity in salt water is gold. Platinum does pretty well and for stone diamonds are pretty much indestructible. Titanium beats bronze. Bronze is definitely easier to work with, and costs much less. Of course there are different types of bronze.

Hey guys sorry to join on the thread so late, thanks Kathy for alerting me. I see Kristina's ex's point about South Monastary, but (selfishly) I do think that Breakwater would be a better place.

She was always eager to take anyone as a buddy, especially newly certified divers. Kristina said that she loved to share diving with new divers, as a way of giving back (she even called in sick to help out with a disabled veteran's training class) and I think this is the best way for her to continue doing so. Within Breakwater, I think there are 2 good options, one is near Metridium (as Fisheater and others are suggesting), so she can serve as a guide to and back for everyone; the other is near middle reef area, near her "round thing" (http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/norcal/328851-id-needed-some-object-bw.html). We never could figure out what that object was....

As for milling, I'll see if I can get in touch with some folks and see what they can do/ideas...

As for cost of things, I think Kristina has enough friends that can make the plaque happen, just a matter of making a plan...

I think letters would be better raised.

Not to butt in, as I'm not a local, but I think ZKY has a point with copper. Not that bronze wouldn't last well, but it will be much more quickly covered in growth. That may not be a bad thing if it's part of the plan of course.

Boat bottoms (fiberglass/wood/steel) and running gear (bronze, stainless) are typically quickly covered by marine growth in salt water if not covered with anti-fouling paint. The active ingredient in many of these paints is copper, and some boats (more in the old days) were sheathed in copper.

Granted, Norcal is not a super high fouling area, but the plaque should be there for quite some time.

I hope you don't mind me piping in. I dived on a wreck this winter that had a memorial plaque for a diver and it was a really poignant and nice thing to see. Got a bit of a lump in my throat when I noticed it.

PS: I just watched Kathydee's video of Metridium Fields. What an interesting and beautiful place to dive! And 111 minute dive time... nice :)

I think BW was a happier place for Kristina than Monastary Beach :).
