I post, but I hate being pinged with ads on FB. I routinely clean out the ads that come up with "against my beliefs". I don't care what it is. Just flat pisses me off....

I am not sure what the ads are you are referring to on FB... I don't know that I have ever noticed one....describe this please, and I will keep my eye open for one in the future....

I had an account for about a month to see a friend's pictures from a trip. She only posted a handful, so I deleted the account my account. I don't understand the reason behind FB I guess. I prefer emails and posting on boards like Scubaboard where anyone can read my reports.

Facebook? Nah, never touch the stuff.

This whole REASON for FB thing had me avoiding it most of the time, for the past few years.....Now I am thinking that it is alot more than I had thought it was, and that it might be a much bigger part of our futures....things like being able to search what your friends think about things you have questions on...rather than going to Google and getting 5 pages of advertising cr#P--AND pretty much nothing close to what you were looking for.... Google is worst when you want to find a manufacturer web site, and all you get are 20 pages of re-sellers....Facebook is a new way around all of this, with it's Graph Search....but that is just part of the issue I am re-thinking...the other thing is how DOMINANT Facebook posting is in the lives of so many people I know..ignoring it, is almost like ignoring your friends.
And one of the cool things is that there are no Anonymous posters on Facebook...people say what they would in front of their real friends. This is a real problem on SB, where fake names create all manners of unrealistic posting... So the real question could be....did we miss something?

I don't do Facebook or Twitter. Just don't feel that I want to broadcast a whole lot about my life to "freinds" or those who become freinds by clicking on something. SB is different. You pick and choose specific things that have to do with scuba. Discuss topics with others, not simply put a lot of info. out there for lots to read. Regarding actual Ads on Facebook: I can say that I have personal knowledge of just how incredibly difficult it is for someone to get Facebook big wigs to give the go ahead for placing an ad with them. Darn near impossible. If that weren't so, can you imagine how many ads would be there?

I have a small circle of friends and family. I post a bit about my trips from time to time and love putting up the pictures of my adventures. I also enjoy watching their posts and keeping up with my peeps that way. The adverts occasionally tick me off, but in the end that's what is keeping facebook free to me.

I think a business using only Facebook for advertising might be a bad decision. Using it as their only web presence in place of having a real website, which I've seen occasionally, is even worse. Sure lots of people have facebook accounts, but lots don't, and I know many people that simply won't. And I'd guess lots of people that have accounts aren't regular users. (Also, if someone really wants to do social media properly, Facebook is not necessarily the only thing they should be looking at.)

My sentiments exactly. Although, I have been thinking about setting up an account lately simply because it is so ubiquitous these days. So many of my friends and family use it to post pictures and happenings.

I assume youre yanking my chain...

I post a ton of dive stuff on facebook. We have a group unofficially affiliated with our university program's dive club. Since the club doesn't run on school break and only runs on email and one meeting a quarter, we use the group to keep up to date with each other.

I know myself and my friends rarely see the FB ads. It only catches our attention enough when something ironic pops up. Like two ads with conflicting motives or hilariously paired catch titles.
I should rather say, we see it, but we do not perceive it. It doesn't catch our attention, we often just glimpse over it.
So I wouldn't rely on it solely for an advertising standpoint.

I mean, how often do you pay attention to the ads here on scubaboard? You see it, but how often do you look into it? Or click it? I rarely do.
