If a license is required to have a VHF radio, why not just get the license? A license is required for SSB in the US, but it only took about 10 minutes to get it.

Just in case that one was directed to me: I don't need a license to have a VHF on my boat, I only need it to use a VHF on my boat. And since I don't see any need for a VHF unless there's an emergency, I can't be bothered to take the exam and pay the annual charge. I don't insure an old beater car either, both the risk and the cost if SHTF is so low that I prefer to pay it off myself rather than to pay an annual premium.

If possession isn't illegal I'd play it the same way you are. The question wasn't directed at anyone in particular, a couple of people mentioned VHF licenses so it was just a general comment.

Naturally, I only know how things are over here, but I think it makes sense that possession isn't illegal in itself. As long as you don't transmit, a VHF is about as much of a nuisance to the people around you as a brick in your back yard.

If you have a marine VHF, though, registration is a good idea. Unless your radio is registered, the distress button won't have any effect. And you can't of course get a registration without a license. My radio isn't a marine unit with a distress button, though, so that's a moot point.

Oh the Irony!

"be made to carry"

No. I hate rules and regulations imposed by a nanny state, presumably for our own good.

Agree with this. I don't want .gov to know where I am, ever. That's why I don't even carry a cell phone.

Sometimes I want uscg.mil to know where I am.

That's the point...
Well, yes: once I'm dead they're welcome to legislate whatever TF they want. Until then: NFW.
