I have a dive that kills the BT link if I try to upload it. I literally reinstalled windows trying to fix it. Previously I had to give up with the built in BT adaptor and use the supplied one, but now the internal one works. Loose some, win some.

Reading something doesn't guarantee you've absorbed or understand how to apply the information.

There seems to be enough info in Deco for Divers to literally build your own dive computer. What more would you recommend before one had reached the point of having had a "lesson"? I'm always game for more information.
A deco dive with someone that knows what they are doing and how to teach it combined with classroom or bookwork. This would be my personal criteria for lesson.

Another way to put it would be some type of formal or informal interactive session. Just reading a book does not cut it. Again, this is my person opinion and way off topic.

Could be a clueless "tec" diver too :)

On this very forum the latest instalment of the "WTF should we set the low GF to?" threads is up to post 214. The previous instalments, on several different forums, have run past 1000 posts.

I am probably going to buy one of these new perdix computers but it will be despite various things I dislike, the positioning of items in the menus, the comparative lack of display customisation and the rather flaky dive upload.

I don't want to be negative about them, but they are not the perfect dive computer that you would think reading SB. They are quite good but there is room for improvement.
Too true!

And I agree the Petrel is far from perfect. I have several "improvements" that I would like to see, ranging from more deco options in rec mode to the dive log continuing count from any manual changes made in the dive count.

I would appreciate being able to use the well characterized Buhlmann ZHL-16C algorithm with gradient factors to construct a slightly more conservative no-stop plan and to have better control of my occasional deco dives. DSAT was really not designed for deco use. I already use MultiDeco to plan and analyze dives, it would be great if it more exactly mimicked my dive computer rather than just approximate it. So, the majority of my dives really just need a reasonable GF hi. Though I would have to experiment a bit, I would probably end up at 90 or 95 and remain more conservative than my current DSAT algorithm. I would probably end up with a GF lo of 40-45 for my occasional deco dives. I'm glad 30/70 works for you, I would imagine you do very different diving than I do.

Good diving, Craig

I am not saying 30/70 works for me, it just has not been necessary to change it yet. I am working up hours on a rebreather and it is almost all no stop on a Suunto set for 32%. Once I move from OC to CC for trimix dives I will move away from the default.

Is there not a deco planner supplied by your computer manufacturer? Dive the computer and pad the shallow stops maybe?

Are you sure DSAT is more aggressive than 95% surfacing gf?

...the dive log continuing count from any manual changes made in the dive count.

Does it not do this anymore? If you change the log number, it begins logging with the new number. At least it did in my Petrel 1 and my two Predators.

Not for me. I may be doing something wrong. I changed the dive count to match my log but each new dive logs at the old count.

Scubadada....I presume your second paragraph was aimed towards myself.

I don't always dive 30/70. Sometimes I dive 20/60, sometimes 35/85, sometimes 60/90. Depends what I'm doing, and more specifically, where!

For shorter dives, such as your own, a higher GF may be useful (to be honest, repeated NDL dives from a boat, somewhere warm is where I'd use 60/90).

Can't you just change the conservatism on the computer to give what you desire?

Though I do see your point about wanting your wrist computer to match your planning, but why not just use gauge mode and write it on a slate? I did this for a long time and worked off average depths and a working knowledge of ratio deco. Perfect for the kind of diving you're describing.

No, not aimed at you, several mentioned 30/70, including KenGordon, who I quoted. Thanks for the reply though, in line with my thinking. My Oceanic computers have a crude mechanism for increasing conservatism, raising the altitude level to the next segment, makes it far too conservative, no fine adjustment. Regarding guage mode, thanks, I'll stick to my computer.

Yes, 30/70 is quite conservative, very significant deco times at DSAT NDLS. No deco planner on my Oceanic computers, just calc of NDLs. No, not positive DSAT is more aggressive than GF 95 but it is very close. I would have to dive both, multiple dives, to really know. Running MultiDeco at various GFs at DSAT NDLs is a reasonable approximation.
