@Christi and @JamesBon92007, care to elaborate why Cozumel's "politics" will help with keeping crime away? I'm curious.
Way way too much to go into and I don't really know how to concisely convey it - but maybe El Graduado will see this and chime in with a readers digest version - he is truly an authority on Cozumel history as well as current situations.

*****MOD POST****

Combined the travel warning threads. The powers of a mod are AWESOME!!!!

Well, one factor to consider is that a lot of Mexico's problem with drugs is because of its long coastline where drugs come in and go out. It's not much of a problem for Cozumel since it's an island, and a small one at that.

I feel like I've been put on the spot

I just get the impression that they won't put up with that crap and many people seem to be actively involved in putting a stop to trouble before it escalates. They seem to think the cruise ships are like the golden goose just docked plus they seem to like us divers and want us to keep coming back.

Please take a moment to watch this quick interview video of one of our long time residents Dailene who is also the owner of Cabrilla Sports.

A moment of vulnerability here - Those of you who know my story know that I also came here as a single female with no job and no Spanish 16+ years ago - started my business from nothing 15+ years ago - enjoyed success, had a few very rough years personally which actually included hanging out in the bars at night (still safe) - this also affected business of course, but got my life back on track here, became a Mexican Citizen, and have been vigilantly focused on my business again for the last several years. I still feel safe and love living on the island!

Spread the word and share this video please! It's all true!

Great video! Thanks for sharing it with us all.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

hopefully they will stay away from discussing Cozumel's "politics" as SB attempts to limit political discussions to The Pub...regardless of what country's politics are being discussed. I will note that there is a difference between "conditions" and "politics". But once you start talking about policies or behaviour of any party, you are fairly safe in believing that your post will be moved or deleted. Marg, SB Senior Moderator

@JamesBon92007, sorry if you felt like I put you on the spot. It wasn't my intention to make you feel uncomfortable.

I was curious and truly just wanted to understand the "conditions" (as opposed to the "politics") of why people think Cozumel is better equipped to withstand the misfortunes of the mainland.

Why am I getting a sense that it's not a topic that people want to openly talk about? Perhaps it's none of my business since I'm just a tourist?

Apparently political discussions are not allowed here and so far I'm only a tourist too and can only give my personal opinion based upon my limited experience.

Part of the problem is that if the victim does not register a formal complaint against the criminal then there is no investigation and they are free to go.

Thieves in freedom

COZUMEL, Aug. 29 .- Two people were arrested for stealing the presidential house "Quinta Maya" owned by the Federal Government, under the jurisdiction of the Military Garrison. The irony is that there is no complaint to the Attorney General's Office, so there is no investigation, and they would be released.
These subjects identified with the initials JADC and SCP wanted to commit a daring robbery and taking advantage of an oversight in the deficient vigilance that elements of the Military Garrison carried out in the "Quinta Maya", being able to enter by the zone of beaches.
According to data obtained unofficially, upon entering the property were able to take over four flat-screen TVs, leaving without anyone noticing, although this house is guarded by military personnel and where the nation's presidents last Once they arrive on vacation to Cozumel, at some point Felipe Calderón Hinojosa and Enrique Peña Nieto and / or his family did.
Due to the importance of where the robbery was carried out, Public Security was given part, whose elements were making routes in the surrounding areas (something they do not in other cases) and according to the 35th avenue between 12 and 14 the colony April 10 found to the two subjects with the articles and were arrested to be transferred to the municipal jail.
It was mentioned that from the Military Garrison sent elements to corroborate that the articles that took these people in the streets belonged to them, and once checking the legal provenance they were returned.
They were also asked to file their complaint with the State Attorney General's Office, although they did not do so, because according to data released by Edgar Lomeli Dorantes, commander of the Ministerial Police, they did not take any person arrested for this robbery from Public Security , and for that reason the Ministerial Police is not carrying out any investigation in this respect.

That's true- if no complaint is filed
Nothing is done - isn't that true anywhere? But again, the travel advisory isn't about home Invasions (which happen everywhere) - it's about things that have happened on the mainland that have nothing to do with the island.
