I couldn't believe they just banned him for that.
I've known John here since he started. He would be appalled at the insinuation that a thread he was involved in got someone banned.

You are simply wrong and it's simply not true.

I would know - you don't.

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell when we are responding as Members not Moderators. Most of us try to differentiate that.

.... Like users, mods come an go....
I'm not asking for names, just curious.
Has any Mod been involuntarily "De-Mod'd"?. Kinda like Survivor-The tribe has spoken and they are voted off the island?

While I'd love to be a fly on the wall for the mod discussions, simply out of curiosity, I trust that the discussions that do go on, and the conclusions they reach when it comes to moderating this forum, are fair and impartial.

Torching somebody doesn't seem to be a single-choice, single-mod affair, and short of some very specific circumstances (those that Pete mentioned earlier), I'd be willing to bet that any action on the level requiring a permaban is not taken lightly, and the culmination of a substantial amount of evidence leading up to it. In light of that, if someone got permabanned, they probably deserved it, and there's probably a damn good reason that it's permanent in nature.

Yes.

There have been a number of such discussions in the very recent past. Hundreds of posts. Tens of threads.

Yes, they have, but not in a long, long time. No, I won't give names, but they were more interested in derailing fun rather than enabling it. It's why we rarely ask anyone who is interested in being a mod to be a mod. In a list of do's and dont's that a mod agrees to, the very first item is to "Have fun." Mods are selected to lead, not to police. We often work by steering threads through encouraging fun rather than deleting crud. Yes, we do have to take out the garbage from time to time, but that's more the exception than the rule.

Indeed. However, if you feel you can still be a valuable addition and want to be re-instated, a well scripted email to Abuse@ScubaBoard.com is the first step. It should be noted that blaming the mods isn't a good strategy to get back in.

Wow, yet another big loss for sb? That's too bad, I've learned a lot from reading @boulderjohn's posts. Especially the ones about diving history and PADI. He's responsible for changing my mind about padi being all things evil. He's also provided me a nice bit of education with regards to how the agencies began their lives along with insights into why.

Just as the loss of other valuable posters discussed in this thread sucks, so will this one.

Personally, I didn't see anything said here to be all that harsh but obviously BoulderJohn did. I guess I can be a bit obtuse when it comes to my perception of the intent of a post.

John worked very hard to get me to stop bashing PADI. I'm OK with that. I'm still not a fan, and no longer a member, but what he did was good for me and the board. I will miss him terribly, as I think he brings a tremendous knowledge and wonderful way of explaining things, however, I can clearly see the reasons why he is hanging up his spurs. I don't think a single person on the MOD Squad won't miss him and i=his input terribly, and it's interesting that not a single person on the MOD Squad has begged him to stay. I think we all know when we've had enough. And unless John asks Pete to remove his moderator powers, he will still be here whenever he feels it's time to come back, if ever. We have a few mods who just don't come around here no more, with thanks to Tom Petty.

The good thing with that is that you get a very tangible feedback on whether or not you're playing within the rules of the forum.

True, feedback from mods is good. But if you have to wonder, maybe its no. And maybe finding the exact line isn't really the point. There's lots of good fun enlightening discussion available while keeping a good margin away from the line. While putting less load on the mod-squad. Kind of like no-deco, is it a good idea to dive *right* at the line?
