Yes the $183 is just theory. Just seems like it is way more than the book. If a skip elearning it is $145 less by my math.

The last time I tried to do my advanced they said I could do either. But when I got there they were not happy that I was not done and ready to dive. So I wanted to check.

It would be nice to just be done with it and spend more time doing other things since I am on an island!
I did my theory in the UK and practical dives in Malta and didn’t have a problem.

I emailed them in advance and asked for a quote letting them know that I’d do the theory somewhere else.

I am surprised that a shop would not honour their word and cause you issues as you could post bad reviews.

Out of curiosity, how did they tell you that they were not happy you transferring ?

What resort is being this difficult about having someone do advance?
This was a small place in Belize. They just did not have the staff I think. Part my fault as they said either, I said online, but did not get it done.

Ah if you do it online make sure that you do it a bit in advance so you can get the details sorted.

I did theory with a dive centre so they gave me a PIC (a document attesting that I passed the theory). I had to give it to the dive centre so they could issue me the AOW card.

I did the regular book learning, and the materials only covered a subset of the available dives to choose from. Is the online module more comprehensive?

There should more dives covered in the PADI AOW book than in eLearning. I have a 2014 version here, lists 16 adventure dives, but that selection may have changed. eLearning just includes the 7 most popular. Also, with the book you only have to do the 5 sections you will be diving, while eLearning you need to complete all 7 to count it as complete.

Now, if you are doing an Adventure dive that is not in the AOW book, academics are contingent on what that dive is. If it is a standardized specialty that has academic materials, you will need to buy that book and complete the work for the specialty dive #1. (EAN/Nitrox is an example of this - but you would want to finish the Nitrox course anyway to get that card, so no big deal there.) There are a few standardized specialties that don't have books, so that will depend on how that specialty is written. (I don't recall if they provide Knowledge Reviews for lecture only content, but I don't think so.)

Thanks for all the replies.

I guess I just don't get the $145 price diff for the same thing. Seems odd. If anything online should be cheaper. It probably comes down to the cost split. The school prob pays $35 for the book. Seems like PADI is up charging the online.

I am torn. I would prefer to be done ahead of time and spend more time at the beach but that is a decent amount of $. I have to decide by tomorrow.

My 2016 book has 13 listed specialty dives and the thinking like a diver section. Some sections are fairly detailed. Some others are just there. Given the place I was diving out of, several of the book dives just were not offered because of the location.

I don’t get how you come to $145 difference: I already posted it but let me repeat again in case it was missed due to the other replies.

I believe that the first price includes the practical dives and the last one does not. So there is no difference as you’d pay probably $145 for two days of practical dives ...

Price for Full course with the book at the dive shop is $380.
If i do online dive shops drops to $345.
PADI online is $183.
So I pay $345 + $183 = $528. That is $145 more than the $380.

Unless there is some fee to PADI that is in addition to the course at the dive shop?

So the first two prices were ONLY for theory ? They did not include practical dives ?

Here is a Florida price: PADI Advanced Open Water Certification | Two Day Course | Florida Keys Dive Center | Florida Keys Dive Center

It is $325 and already includes the two days of practical dives so you do not have to pay anything else.
