I did pool in the UK and OW in the Caribbean. 6 learners plus instructor in pool. 1 learner (me) plus instructor in the Caribbean. I now do intend do dive in the UK but am glad that I got the confidence in good visibility first. I think if I had low vis on my first Ow dives it would have put me off.
Well I studied it over 3 weeks and did all the questions at the end of each chapter. I got confused by BCDs and Din,yoke connections to tanks etc but it became much clearer once I got my hands on the actual equipment.
Dont worry too much and like previous people say, look particularly at the...
Hi Jon Boi - well done and respect to you! I hope we meet sometime in Budleigh. Glad you are buddying with the instructor - you will feel more confident that way. I was really lucky with my OW in that it was just me and the instructor so much better than the pool situation previously.
Happy...
Thanks! I am used to the "old folk" - quite a few live in Devon and many are friends (!) - actually they are quite a lively bunch when you get to know them and could people of my age to shame.
thanks for the advice on Cornwall. It is one of my favourite parts of England so I will look into...
Don't be ashamed of falling over! That beach is very steep and I have done this enough times coming out of the water after swimming when the sea is rough. Please keep going with your stories. I want to dive off Budleigh sometime so it is very useful info for me. Good luck with the rest of your...
Hi Jon Boi - thanks for this. Someone else recommended Jurassic Coast as well. I saw your other post re diving in Budleigh. I know this town really well - have been visiting it since 1977 and have swam in the sea often there. I also did my windsurfing qualifications in Exmouth! Maybe one day I...
Hi - I am interested in possibly diving in the UK - South or South West in September. However, having been "spoilt" with very good visibility abroad I am worried about visibility, currents etc. Are there any good dive spots where visibility is 20ft or greater as the norm. Obviously I know...
Would someone explain the "panic cycle" and how to break it? most of the time I am confortable underwater, but then get panicky without any reason. I normally take control of my breathing and slow down at that point in case I had got overexcited looking at something!
I also suffer from leg cramps both windsurfing and diving. Recommend plenty of water and the banana also! At least you will be ace at the Cramp removal part of the OW test!
Honestly, don't worry. On the swim tests I was with 3 other girls and they swam very slowly using a mixture of side stroke and breast stroke. There is no time limit. They just want to make sure you can keep moving over that distance. Practice swimming slowly on your back as well as this takes up...
Re 12 foot visibility, yes I know I have been spoiled and intend to keep spoiling myself!!
to Stoo - thanks for the warning!! I look forward to looking at more stupid fish and have yet to see a turtle.............................
Well I finally did it. Qualified on 22 June 2006. St Lucia
OW dive 1 went smoothly shore dive to 30 feet. Quite similar to a resort dive really. However I had problems equalising then I got a cold and had to wait a week.
OW dive 2 was interesting. Boat dive. There was a day of heavy rain in St...
Hi, Just an update. I have just returned from three weeks in St Lucia and the weather was very good apart from two days. So, it can be variable in June but this year we were lucky!
He is still there! I checked two weeks ago. Unfortunately, despite all his years of experience, he is not qualified to take me through my OW referral. :-( His qualifications are non-PADI.
Divingjd, I did my first ever resort dive with him 5 years ago and I got hooked. My husband and I went...
Hi, Anse Chastanet is lovely for diving and snorkelling. However it is isolated from restaurants so, regretabbly, I would opt for All Inclusive. You are about 20 minutes drive from Soufriere which does have restaurants but it will be a bumpy ride!
Castries - as mentioned in the previous post-...
Yup, I had the same problem, not being able to see the buckle so I am now practising this without looking at the belt!
Thanks for your support and all the best with your diving!
