Man...everybody is so smart calling the guy an idiot and dork etc. As if, none of you have ever come close to a potentially dangerous marine animal. Many people get hurt without even trying. So, he took a chance to entertain his group of divers...and lost a pinky. Regardless of what the 'wise-guys' are saying, it can happen to anyone. At least he's being a good sport about it, read:

Florida Keys Treasures - Puffer Bites Diver

You are joking right ......?

Reading the article ...

"I first touched the fish on the head to get him to come out of the hole ... snip ... this guy was not budging... snip ... Persistently, I waggled my hand in front of his face ...snip... My hope was to entice him to come out and play....."

Funny thing how the "wise-guys" have all their fingers and the idiot is missing one.

Are you sure the shark was after the speared fish? Maybe the word got out in the fish kingdom that Randy tasted good.

I can hear them talking now:

"Should Randy be eaten with the fingers, or should the fingers be eaten separately?"

OK, corny, but I can't help myself sometimes.

So do you think it's true that he lost his finger in the manner described (pufferfish)? I noticed at the bottom of the JDC page that it says "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."

It's true. I know Randy, and I've seen his hand minus a digit. He's a character. A good guy, but very......shall we say......adventurous? He likes to entertain his divers, even at his own personal expense. He is no longer affiliated with JDC, though. A much more conservative and safety conscious guy (Gerry) owns it now, and runs a good, safe operation. Randy runs another operation out of Hobe Sound now, geared toward spearfisherpersons and solo divers.

Good collection of such stuff, sometimes I'm sorry for the humankind spreading too much on this planet. Some people do not understand that they are guests in the liquid environment and they should respect it and its habitants. I wish the puffer had bigger teeth.

Probably because we "wise-guys" try to give potentially dangerous marine animals plenty of room as opposed to harassing them. It isn't like this guy was swimming along and accidentally wandered into a fish's territory, he was really working hard at getting bit.

Besides, what right did he have to stress the fish to the point it bit him just to entertain some other divers?
