@Charred yes, you need something inside of that hose. it will either be air or water unless you physically suck the air out and collapse the hose *not recommended*

basically yes, but you should have that air built in when you do your weight checks since there is no way to get it out at the surface
 
Tbone- Thank you. I think this all makes sense now. We felt like we were doing things right with respect to dumping yet couldn't explain the air in the hose.

Stuart - Thanks for the idea on changing the light's length with different sized boltsnaps.
