NAUI DM is not "higher" than a PADI DM - just the wording different and a different approach. How the two are taught and what training you actually receive will depend on the dive center and your instructor(s). We routinely over teach in both PADI and NAUI DM. If you include Master Scuba Diver, Assistant Instructor and Divemaster in one package you're not far from the PADI DM course, there are some notable differences but the two are comparable.

Price vs value is very important. There is no reason a zero to hero program should not exceed minimum standards. Many dive centers will not use divemasters in training for anything other than tank filling, etc but a busy year round dive center will probably be fully employed and find it difficult to "make" a job for a DMT in exchange for training. Smaller dive centers often exchange work for training. A NAUI DM should really be a NAUI Assistant Instructor first, at least that's what NAUI recommend.

The price you'll pay will vary hugely depending on what type of operation you decide to go with. You could go from free to $1,000+. You may need to buy the required materials on top of the course fee or they may be included. For NAUI will be around $170. Required materials for PADI will be around $250.
