Well, mebbe a little song will help explain it all ...

I see a red wing and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the strokes walk by dressed in their neon clothes
I have to turn my head because their snorkel glows
I see a line of fins and they’re all painted black
My drysuit came in blue I have to take it back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a rant from GI3 it just happens ev’ry day
I look inside my mask and see the skirt is black
I see my red wing and it has been painted black
Maybe then I’ll fade away and not have to face the facts
It’s not easy to find your team when their whole kit is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
My gear will be black till they invent a darker hue
If I look hard enough with my Halcyon HID
I’ll spot the blue H on my buddy’s BCD

I see a red wing and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the strokes walk by dressed in their neon clothes
I have to turn my head because their snorkel glows
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!

... (ducking quickly for cover) ... :D

Absolutely superb, coffee-on-the-monitor, everyone-in-the-office-staring-at-me-laughing-like-a-**** humour!

Thanks a million!

Just curious, why the push for black gear when diving DIR?

What a self-explanatory question...

Why did Patton wear fatigues to bed? Why don't you wear hot pink underwear to work? What color is the presidential motorcade?

Why was Johnny Cash the Man in Black?

Quite serious - they were also at one time available in yellow and blue. I think the colors are pretty hard to come by nowadays, though - maybe on eBay.

My understanding was that the non-black fins were made from a different (more buoyant and less rigid) material though .. not 100% but that's what I seem to remember

Many older gear was made with all kinds of color, but black is the cheapest color to manufacture with.

Duh.

2 weeks ago at pssp i saw pink, baby blue, and white jets *all in the same day*! not twin jets, real ones! i was sooo jealous. i think they sell/sold them in asia, but when i went to the scubapro asia website i couldn't find them - boo hoo!

Nope, not even that.

Check the gavinscooters archives, GI3 went on a rant about black mask skirts being strokery caused by diving with poor buddies with bad light skills.

Really, IMO, the mask thing is up to you. If you get better peripheral vision with a clear skirt like GI3 does, then you want a clear skirt. If you have issues with light coming in your peripheral vision that is not caused by buddy light-waving issues, then you want a black skirt. Everyone's vision and sensitivity to light will differ, so I doubt there's one-size-fits-all here. I don't really care. I use black-skirted masks because the ones that I've got fit my face well, are low-volume and don't flood constantly during dives which are the really important features to look for...

In fact, GI3 used his clear skirt to be able to read a note in a silt out by placing his light by the skirt with the note against his mask...
