BlueTrin, if you want to read about other divers' fatal mistakes and what you can learn from them, check out the Lessons for Life column in Scuba Diving magazine online, or the book Diver Down.

It's very easy for an inexperienced diver to panic at depth, which typically results in a reflexive, instinctive rapid rush to the surface to "get to safety". Bad things tend to happen under such circumstances. As per your example, few people tend to panic while riding a motorcycle around a track and if they do they can simply stop what they're doing.

Not stopping is usually what newbies do to wreck their bikes. They may really want to stop but you have to think and work against instinct to actually stop, so they instead accelerate like madmen unil they meet an immovable object. It's like learning to not hold your breath. Your brain says hold it a d kick loke mad, when what you need to do is exhale and swim

Back ot,my lds does discover for free, it's a pool dive. I'd be OK letting someone do a shallow dive after a little orientation if you're staying at regular swimming/snorkeling depths.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

This thread is closed.
There are only two topics we don't allow on ScubaBoard:
  • Learning Scuba without an instructor (this would include DSDs)
  • Learning overhead Scuba (Cavern, wreck, etc) without an instructor.

That's it. Don't take another person's health or life in your hand unless you've been trained to do it. If you do, we really don't want to read about it here.
