I guess that proves my point. If your spring failed after 45 or so years, depressing the spring for seat saving purposes would be justified to save the seat.
Keeping the spring depressed DOES NOT cause any fatigue!
I repeat the concept again: fatigue is caused by a large number of compression-relaxation cycles.
Keeping a constant modest compression on the spring, even for many years, does not cause any fatigue.
