TRIP REPORT: Dominica 2013

Our family (three adults) stayed at Titiwi.com Apt/Condo for 11 nights May 25-Jun 5, 2013 during our trip to Dominica (Dom-in-EEK-a). It's located in Citronier, south-west Dominica and just a few minutes outside the capital of, Roseau. This apartment/condo works very well for people traveling together in a small group and/or families. It was clean and comfortable and had good working AC in bedrooms. It is right on the busy street (as most places are given the hilly environment, but the back of the building is on the beach and there is a pool...great views, etc. As mentioned earlier, the airport is in the NE corner of the country and about 1 1/2 hour drive down to the capital of Roseau. (Taxi was prearranged to meet us at the airport by the Titiwi owners, and is about $30US/person). We heard the south had the best diving as the boats go into the marine park and it's a 20 min short trip. If conditions allow the boats can go around the tip and diving is incredible there too.

We walked each morning along that busy street for just 3 mins to Castle Comfort Dive Dominica for scuba diving (they have rooms there also, however, we chose not to stay there as we wanted separate bedrooms). Dive Dominica met all our needs for 19 day/night dives each, over our stay. The dive company was pretty busy whereas most other operator boats weren't going out often (we were there in low season...early June).

The diving was perfect for us...fairly easy dives overall, pretty good ratio of diver/dm but boats were busier than we're used to; so much to see...some areas had a bit of current, lots of unique dive sites such as "Champagne" where the bubbles come up out of the rocks due to the geothermal activities; saw our first sea horses (several times), and just tons of beautiful fish and coral everywhere...night dives not to be missed right off the dock at Dive Dominica gave terrific results (huge crab/lobster/squid/octopus). I'd go back if we had the time and $$. Our two Canadian airlines fly directly into Antigua and then connect to a short island hopper to Dominica.

We tried lots of small restaurants within walking distance or short bus trips from TITIWI...our favourites included Drop Anchor (Quesadillas or Lion Fish Burgers and Margaritas), Dive Dominica (Sunday BBQ or Chicken Pasta Set Dinner), ZamZams Mexican (bit pricey but good food) and Tao (unique menu). There's a fresh market in town on weekends for fruit, etc.

Don't be looking for 4-5 star accommodation in general while in the country. Enjoy what is unique about Dominica...ie, the pure, natural and rugged beauty and warm/generous people, and let's hope it stays that way. The country is not overly developed and is not a heavy tourist area at least at that time of year (NOTE: they tell us that Oct-Feb/Mar are heavy tourist months with cruise ships).

We hiked to Boiling Lake but it had been raining for a few days so the conditions were pretty rough. I'm glad we went...we are hikers in our Cdn mtns so thought we'd be in good shape, however, this was HARD. Even our terrific guide was exhausted. I agree with earlier suggestions not to go in with babe. We also enjoyed walking the beautiful beaches up north of the airport as we also stayed in that area before leaving the county, in the rainforest at Roots Jungle Retreat Bed & Breakfast Accommodation in Dominica | Roots Jungle Retreat. It is under new management so website is not overly accurate (yet)...they looked after us well. It's pretty isolated and recommended to have 4-wheel drive to get in and out the 12 kms to the property.

Enjoy!
janice
