Check out http://www.utilaecology.org for great volunteering experience working on coral reef health, fisheries, whale shark and dolphin surveys and terrestrial ecology alongside research scientists and conservation specialists. Volunteers (PADI AOW or equivalent) can come for 2,4, 8 or more weeks and get involved in all research areas - a great way of deciding where your interests lie and whether you really like research. Training in all necessary skills provided during first week. Research findings are used to inform conservation strategies and community development.
