I've had too many people come and try to do it in 4 days and when I stopped the class on the 2nd or 3rd day, they got upset. So now, although standards allow otherwise, I won't take someone into AN/DP that hasn't completed an Intro to Tech / Sidemount or Intro to Cave program.
I do an evaluation dive. As itt is not required, i will not go to an instructor who makes his own rules.
But i agree, some are not prepared. The evaluation dive works well and then you know if itt is needed or can be skipped. Look at the individual.
I have done my own courses also, and now do it as instructor.
Some really need itt, some dont.

I also take the student candidate on a evaluation dive , I also interview on the phone NO TEXTS , I can usually call the experience by talking to them , then I allow a dive evaluation
