The other thing you can do is turn your first stage upside down, so it dousn't stick out passed the valve.
 
A really good tip:

When you are putting the hose around the back of your neck, grab your second stage in your right hand and the hose in your left. Bend the hose and "Sweep" (run the hose over your head so that the hose is in constant contact with you head) your head with the hose, and bring the hose to rest on your neck. This should be all the slack you need.

It sounds like you are putting too much hose behind you and it is getting caught up in either your tank valve or your 1st stage. By doing this, you should stay free of both. I usually tuck the rest into my harness in a comfortable spot.
