I did have trouble getting the 5 foot Dive Rite SMB completely full on the surface while filling it from my exhaust tee at 25 feet since it is so wide

Get negative before deploying and use your fins to stay neutral while inflating. Deeper is easier but not always practical. Of course you can always top it off at the surface

or use my octo to fill it from a shallower depth

You can purge you primary while it's in your mouth
