I just read this book, and I thought it was great.
I read The Last dive a couple of years ago, but I felt this one was the better of the two.
As far as fame and/or fortune, I think it is pretty clear that they wanted the fame, but not the fortune. There are numerous times when it was mentioned that they would hate for some new guy to come back to the boat with a name plate stuck to his fin or mask. These guys WANTED to be the ones to discover the true identity, and they should have been, imho.
I have never met the writer or the divers, but I would go out of my way to do so in the future. It is an incredible story, and a great read...
