Get a different shop, instructor, and get some gear that fits and works for YOU!!! I definitely agree with loosebits, diving should be fun, that's why we're all here...

Keep trying, you'll love it once you get a good instructor.

31 lbs is a lot of weight I'm 6'2 & 240 lbs & I wear a 7MM wetsuit with gloves & hood. I wear only 20 lbs weight. In a dry suit I only use 22 lbs. being overweighted can add a lot to anxiety. When I firt got my O/W the dm had me in 38 lbs. It was way to much I sunk like a rock & had a heck of a time being neutral. Stay with it becaure lake diving can be awesome.
