My instructor told the class that he didn't want tips, but we should tip the divemasters that were assisting him. The DMs were doing this on their free time.

CARZYDIVER:
im going to be done with my pool and class sessions this wed, and i am not sure on how much i should tip my instructor and his asst. i dont want to short change them but i dont want to over tip aswell, if my pockets could handle it i wouldnt mind, but they cant, so whats a descent tip for these guys? they are both great teachers.

I think the answer depends on where you live. Maybe in some
countries an instructer is making next to nothing, has no other
source of income and a $20 tip
would be a big deal to him but at the shop where I took OW
most instructors were "part timers" who held day jobs that
paid at least double what most students make. They were
clearly not in for the money. But actually making good on
all the bears you owe for leaving a tank upright or a mask
on forehead would be fun to pay off.

I did buy about $1500 of equipment from him! I always tip the boat brew at least 10% however. I also support my LDS (when there is one)
