A big yes to that, especially considering the inconsistency of pot laws. For example, recreational cannabis is legal in California, but I would be willing to make a large wager that if a city in California is your point of entry into the US and you are found with marijuana at US immigration, you will still have a problem with the Feds.
Exactly; when you enter the US, you do that first, with federal employees checking you through, THEN you enter the state.

Chemo patients have severely compromised immune systems and shouldn't be out galavanting around. Yes some wish to be out and about but international travel isn't a reality. All those illegal products they may want at available in Mexico and a few other places where debauchery

Well, I'm definitely glad I consulted with the scubaboard oncology department....

No gallivanting or debauchery.

Dogs screen incoming and outgoing international passengers and are trained for Marijuana. If they alert, you are going to have a bad day regardless of what the state's law allow. Small amounts (single leaf or some minuscule crumbs) might not get you arrested, but it will substantially delay your trip. If you're here on a visa they can and will cancel it. Part of the visa application asks is you're a drug user. Black and white with immigration. You lied and are now banned from entering the US under whatever application you used that time and are flagged for future visits. International drug trafficking is a FAAFO type of thing.
My point, if you as a citizen enter in Calif. with “personal“ use level of weed you may get arrested but the Jury drawn from the state will not convict, maybe better to say are unlikely to convict.

Just walk the downtown square. We ofter are approched with offers for drugs, cigars, weed.... you name it.

I doubt that any oncologist has recommended illegally smuggling pharmaceuticals into foreign countries.

Or purchasing their normally prescribed drugs on the streets of Mexico!!!

Whether or not you would eventually be convicted of anything notwithstanding, I believe that for even "small" amounts of pot it would make for a very bad day for you if you are caught with it at a federally policed US entry point irrespective of state drug laws.
That's right, a pretty good chance of being arrested. Between arrest and conviction are posting bond/collateral, legal fees for appearance(s) at preliminary hearing and/or trial, travel for court appearance(s), etc. Thousands of dollars and lots of stress.

I sympathize with the discussion of chemo patients, but my sympathy does not really change the analysis.

By the way, seems like there has been an officer with a dog walking around in the Cozumel airport each time we have visited recently, and they did come up and sniff us and our belongings (family of 4, not especially Narco looking :) ).

And I'm sure an oncologist is going to sign off on going to Mexico while currently undergoing chemo... you're playing with fire but you do you. Seen my share of cancer in the family and not a single one was capable or willing to travel while undergoing treatment. Going to the store was a chore let alone air travel. If you must have your illegal drug down in Mexico then buy it there.
