Ditto slipslop's experience. We were there the last week of March and first week of April in 2005 and it rained many days. The trip out to the Coral Sea (Osprey Reef) and back was very rough. Maybe January/February are better, but research carefully before you decide!

OK, only one of these is in the Caribbean, but the two best snorkel spots I've come across are Waterlemon Cay on St. John and the Captain Cook Monument on the Big Island of Hawaii. Both require some effort to get to -- for Waterlemon, we had to park our car at the ruins of a sugar plantation...
