I just looked at your pic again and searched the web. Unless I am not looking at your pick correctly, this is not what my old Apeks regs had on them.

It looked more like my Rite Bite where the flap pointed up and rested behind the upper teeth. Most people I knew had a gag reflect from this alone.

My old Apeks regs looked like this

That is what I always understood the comfobite to be.

teknitroxdiver:
That one there is made by AquaLung.

What's the reasoning behind it?

thanks again

It is a comfo bite on the pic, and they do come w/ Apeks regs at least now they do, My wifes snorkle (aqualung) as well as mine also had one.

My friends dont really care for them but I love em. although I will admit for the first couple of dives it does rub the top of you mouth (of course I did 3 dives that day). Never had anyone complain after an S drill.

WaterDawg:
I am ignorant of what your talking about can you explain?

The Comfo Bite is actually a short mouth pice and I will agree the longer ones like one sold by Trident and on Sherwood regs, make me gag!
Here are some threads with more explanation that doesn't need to be repeated:

NOTE: I'm not saying they aren't effective. I'm not saying they aren't more comfortable, particularly if you have TMJ. I'm neither endorsing or not endorsing them. The question was "Are they DIR?" The answer tends to be "No" (for different reasons - moldables don't fit everyone, the bridged products must be trimmed to allow them to be spread, etc.)

teknitroxdiver:
So, since this is a non-molded mouthpiece (I held it up to the regular one on my backup reg, and they appear to be the same length) it's okay?
No, it's not.
The reasoning is as doc said that if you have a toxing diver that is having convulsions, you have to get him on your gas as it's the one that you know is right for the depth because you're OK, in this case, you can not seal the mouth piece to the mouth of the toxing/convulsing diver with a comfobite.

I guess since I don't have any deco training I'm not really sure what the procedure for a toxing diver with deco obligation is; you don't actually put the mouthpiece in their mouth?

aquaoren:
You can't, their teeth are clenched. You try to seal the mouth piece to their lips.
There has been a procedures change. For diver rescues, if they have a reg in, you keep it in. If they have a reg out, you leave it out. So mouthpieces and rescues no longer matters.

"Custom" heat molded mouthpieces are not generally accepted due to them not fitting other than their owner. Comfobites by Aqualung are not typically a problem unless someone on the team in uncomfortable with them.

They are definitely fine for your backups, but check with your buddies for long hose and stage/deco use.

Doc,
I see you did I search for Seacure, and DIR. That wasrnt my question. IM not trying to be dificult but thoses links are mostly about the moldable mouth pieces. NO one is talking about them here, forget you ever mentioned them.
I did find an explanation from MHK about the long mouth pieces, but again the comfobite is not.

I even found post by people saying they've done GUE classes w/ them and no prob. The only thing that relates to my question was a post by you saying that maybe you cant spread it apart, enough to put it against a divers mouth who is Ox toxing and has spit out his reg. Thats it 3 links for one post...from you. Im gonna have to say that if it indeed is NOT DIR, nothing was proven in those threads.
