Another option is to find a place to rent for an extended period - rent your reg for a week during your vacation if you find you like what you've got after the first dive. You can take it around to different dive ops and won't have to use different gear for each dive.

To be quite honest, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the cost and variety of equipment and I relish the opportunity to try different gear in the water from rental shops so when I do drop a load of cash, I know I'm getting what I want.

Having seen the state of some regs that are rented out here in UAE and how some customers treat rental gear, I am glad what I stick in my mouth is my own.
