You can scuba dive just fine without a BC, but you can't without a reg. That aside, you may find your taste in BCs changes as you try several different types. I recommend getting a great reg that will last you a lifetime, and a cheap BC that will do the job for a while. No hurry on the BC purchase... I think it's better to try a bunch of different ones before comitting, and renting gives you a great opportunity to do that.
