It's a bottom timer, what exactly do you think it's function is? :shakehead:

As I stated earlier, which also mimicked TSandM's TDS post, the larger fonts would be a benefit worthy of a few additional shekels for some folks.

Go-ahead and post your gear line-up on your profile and I bet I could second guess your selections saving you hundreds if not thousands...

some of us do have disposable income and like shiny new toys...

my hesitancy is more that all the shiny new toys seems to be overly complicated and don't have the same reliability as a dead-stupid bottom timer.

I certainly have nothing against anyone spending their hard earned money however they see fit, but let's be honest, for the most part, this is little more than a shiny toy (that happens to be $$$). There are plenty of other good options for less money that have all the features one would need for DIR diving (including large font).

I just find it a bit sad that some would choose an expensive BT over good training (e.g. Fundamentals)... If you already have the training, experience, basic gear, and money burning a hole in your pocket, then it's a different issue. :)

I am not going to let you go on this one. Read my lips - IT OFFERS LARGER FONTS AND IS THUS EASIER TO READ THAN OTHER BT'S. If it was a gold plated UWATEC I would agree with you 100%...

Here is Lynn's post on TDS.

"I think the Liquivision has a few advantages over the Uwatec (which, when I went looking at pricing on line, seems to run in the $350 range). It's downloadable, and has replaceable batteries. And then, of course, there's the extremely readable and LARGE display. Worth another $150? It would be to me (but I already own an X1)."

i haven't seen anyone posting that they were thinking of doing that, seems to be an argument that you've invented.

having dove with the UEMIS a bit i also think there's an argument that OLEDs are better for diving in low light / limited viz diving. not having to light it up with your light or press a button to turn on the backlight reduces fiddling.

I meet *lots* of local divers who say they'd like to take Fundies (or any further training), but don't have the funds to do so. Inevitably, they do have blinged out dive gear, though. For many divers, it would indeed seem that past gear choices limit their ability to seek high quality training.

As for the "fiddling", what's that about gear solutions to skills issues?

For now, I'll use my current bottom timer. When it's time for an upgrade, it'll most likely be the Liquidvision. It IS very cool.
I love the screen. It's much cooler, I'm sure it could beat up the Uwatec. ;-)

Gear vs. Training? That's easy, do both. ;-)

i'd bet they're avoiding fundies for other reasons and finances is just the stated reason...

an awful lot of our gear is optimized to reduce task loading.

should we all dive a cluster of a kit in order to keep our skills as sharp as possible?
