Are they legal in Cayman? I thought any kind of spearing was prohibited over there?

This is the Cozumel board. Some issues re: scuba and spearing but I don't think you'll hear much opposition when it comes to lionfish.

Sorry, I just assumed from Robb's username that he lived in Cayman...

My error.

No worries, people ask that all the time. In fact, I got my username from the Ron Mexico generator: Ron Mexico name generator

Long story short, Michael Vick was using the alias Ron Mexico to buy STD meds. Someone created a site where you enter your name and get your own Ron Mexico name. Mine was robbcayman, so I've used it ever since.

Lion tamers? They are not even authorized by the marine park so at that price of $20.00 you could actually buy them and not use them at all in Cozumel. J Unless you want to break marine park rules which really isn’t the way to go about it. I know everyone has an opinion and everyone is an expert but why not this once try, just try to follow what the experts say? The fact of the matter is there has been time spent by several marine parks in the Caribbean measuring and finding the best option in the market. Finally, a tool has been authorized by the Cozumel Marine Park and there is a specialty course sanctioned by PADI. Also there are three different Marine Parks in the Caribbean using this tool and this program. Why the insistence with second tier tools with absolutely no program supporting it? Oh yeah that’s right, everyone knows best, except the experts.
Jeez, I just saw the video and there are so many issues to mention that I am amazed no one has pointed them out…Where to start…
1) The non existing handle makes it impossible to grip with your whole hand and allows control for aiming with only two fingers.
2) There is no protection offered from the grip as your fingers have to be exposed to the closest area of the shot. This causes the diver to almost definitely have to wear a glove…Not permitted in the Marine Park and you can clearly see the diver messing around touching everything without issue, (if we only had a grip)
3) The barb bends at one point which shows how cheap this tool is.
4) The diver begins to poke around beneath a coral lifting up sediment whichsuffocates coral.
5) Where is serial number?
6) The lack of three prong option causes misses in tight areas and obligates the diver to poke around to finally get a hit. That is exactly what we are trying to avoid, let me repeat myself I may have not been clear, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO AVOID! This is not about going underwater killing something and because of that you are a lionfish hunter. There is a method to hunting, there is a system to follow and there is a tool in the market that offers the best conditions. Sure you got a hit but what was the consequence? Does everyone onboard agree with you hunting? Did you explain to everyone on board why you are practicing in this hunt? Did you have a buddy checking your air and depth while you were in complete catharsis following your lionfish? Did you go for the kill regardless of the fact that you didn’t have a clear shot? How did you extract the lionfish? Who did you inform of your kill and extraction? Does your tool have a serial number permitting the proper authorities to follow your tool and find its improper use should you lose it, lend it or misplace it? Were you obligated to take a course in the proper use of the tool, one about the history lionfish and one regarding the Marine Park strategy to combat the lion fish?
7) The tip of the tool is exposed throughout the dive.
8) You can see at 1:11 that the diver has to hold down the lionfish against the ground and almost is pricked because the prong being so thin and having one point the lion fish can swim away even after being hit.

Hondaid I completely agree with you on this one!!

btw: Robbcayman just did my Ron Mex.....How's Xavier Sudan for absolute coolness!!

Let me reply. The lion tammer has been authorized to use. It is not authorized for everyone to hunt lion fish inside the marine park. In fact if you want to go so far it us not authorized technically for anyone to hunt lion fish inside the marine park. Because it is a marine park.

As the buddy checking etc... it has absolutly nothing to do with how effective the tool is.

The fact that Padi has course to catch lion fish is great they also have one for spearfishing but I don't know anyone who spearfishes that has taken this course.

Yes, there are risks that come with using this tool. There are plenty of risks that come with even handling a lion fish so anyone who is willingly wanting to hunt lion fish should be fully aware that there is a risk of getting stung no matter what you use. I have seen people at lion fish round ups who are counting the fish brought it get stung.

I do not agree that divers who come to visit are allowed to hunt with spears of any sort with in the marine park.

I understand many of the points made but this tool is very good if you know how to use it and if you are able to choose when and when not to try and hunt a lion fish. Sometimes you just have to decide that today this little fishy is getting a get out of jail free card but maybe not tomorrow.

Hi. You were on here 2 months ago promoting your new PADI lionfish killing cert being offered and your own sling. (It got moved due to its commercial nature). I think you should be clear about your biases here.

So is this what the park will offically allow approved divers to use to take lionfish. They previously issued the nets which just don't do the job with the quanity of lionfish out there. Just curious since I saw a notice that there will be a fundraiser at Senor Frogs to raise money to buy sometype of "spear".
