Looking for some recent experience with Indonesian airlines' excess baggage fees. I'll be flying from Jakarta to Manado, Manado to Sorong, and then Sorong to Jakarta. The first and third flights are on Garuda and the second flight might be on Garuda or Wings Air. I'm probably going to be about 15 kilos over Garuda's 20 kg limit and 25 kilos over Wings Air's 10 kg limit. Thanks.

I got a reply from Garuda (after posting the query on their Facebook site). They say that they allow 20 kg PLUS 23 kg of sports gear (total is a whopping 43 kg!). I think that answer is incorrect, though, because I've seen official documentation indicating that the sports gear allowance is only 15 kg. The responder said, somewhat cryptically, that I needed to go to a Garuda office to get the 23 kg sports allowance, which I also think is incorrect. The official documentation says you have to provide 24 hours notice. So I sent the Garuda e-reservation folks an e-mail notifying them. Hope that works.

Still wondering what Lion Air charges per kg.

Garuda excess: Rp 85,000/kilo
Lion Air excess: Rp 27,000/kilo
Wings excess: Rp 27,000/kilo

All to be paid at the airport.

Also, as I think you've already guessed, you may have misunderstood the Garuda email. You get 20kg standard on domestic flights, that 23kg is not in addition. You'll find that you simply get an extra 3kg.

Thanks very much for that info WP. Here's what the Garuda guy said (which I think is incorrect in any case):

"For domestic flights in economy class you can get 20 kg free. Sports equipment get a free extra 23 kg baggage with the coming into GA office. - Brian"

I flew domestic Garuda last Oct/Nov. 20kg reg allowance + 23kg extra for sporting equipment (scuba gear) free of charge at check-in. Total 43kg no charge. Charge/kg varies at different airports. More at Jakarta & Denpasar, less at outer islands.

Keep in mind that you're in Indonesia - things change.

Were your international flights on the same ticket though?

My own experience...If your international flights are on the same ticket as the domestic flights, then yes, this holds true. If your domestic flights are on a different ticket, then you only get 23kg on the domestic sectors.

Learned this the hard way.

From Garuda Indonesia

All Sporting Equipments, including but not limited to Golfing, Surf board, Bicycle and Skiing equipments may be included into applicable passengers Free Baggage Allowance/FBA according to their actual fare paid.

If you got away with it, consider yourself lucky. It's not supposed to be in addition :)
