It's slimming.

I dive a fluorescent orange OxyCheq wing. I don't want to be a ninja diver, I WANT to be seen (by boats at the surface, by my buddy, etc.)

And as far as black being slimming, I've done the experiment, and it was negative.

One thing about black. When diving cold water - 54°F at the 1st thermocline & 43°F at the second - it's sure nice when you get back into the sun and warm up.

I think the reason is that most people don't want to stick out
I think this is it for me. I really don't like having attention drawn to me--never have. I have never worn seriously stylish clothing. As a young child I was so camera-shy that some of the family picture episodes are still talked about in my family. If I get on a boat filled with people in all black gear, I don't want to be the one that is different. Some of my gear now has red trimming. I don't like it, but I didn't have a choice--that's the way it comes.

It's less of an advantage when you are wearing that gear because of the water temperature but the air temperature is pushing 100°.

Men all wear black tuxedos, and so they don't understand women's need to have some color!
Perhaps your wife can sign onto Scubaboard and talk to other women in the women's issues forum, in particular, women's gear. Meanwhile I want a scuba outfit based on my kids prom dress, this design:

Newbie that did cert dives in murky water, here. Several times when attempting to communicate with the family, I wondered why gloves didn't come with brighter fingertips at least. Sort of like MLB catchers painting their fingernails. Even a pale grey just for contrast. Doesn't need to be gaudy.

Just hold your hand out beside you and do your little gang sign signal. If it is dark enough you need a light then you should be using light signals or illuminating your hand with the light. I see no problem.
