    Diving in Zanzibar and Pemba

Agreed with stefo - One Ocean in Zanzibar (/www.zanzibaroneocean.com) are a good shop. They also have a site near Mnemba Atoll I believe, so you can arrange dives there from their shop in Stone Town.

    Lake Tangayika / Crocodiles

Lake Tanganyika is in a relatively remote part of Tanzania. English is spoken even less there than in the rest of the country, and transport is not easy to secure. There are no dive operators there either AFAIK. I'm not sure about crocodiles but there *are* hippos in the lake - and they can be...

Diving in Fluids other than Water

Only this morning I was browsing through National Geographic's Video Shorts podcasts and I came across one called 'Mexico: Sewer Diver'. Its pretty nasty watching, so much stuff in the water. I don't have a link for it but if you have iTunes just search for National Geographic. Its a 23MB 4min...

    Sea Urchin injury

Those black sea urchins are very common around here and I've had a fair few spines in my legs. Normally I do my best to pull them out (slowly and without bending them) immediately. I think they will be ejected naturally eventually. However, it can cause problems if they fragment whilst inside...

Raising the Dead: Long interesting read

Thanks for the link. I knew the approximate story already but it was interesting to read in detail.

    Air in tank marked Nitrox?

A friend came back from diving today and in his photos I noticed he was wearing a yellow and green tank marked "NITROX". Now he isn't Nitrox certified but he said the dive op had assured him they had just filled the tank with air. This seems a bit odd to me. If a tank is marked for one gas, I...

    Hand signals procedure

...and maybe the finger....but then we digress from diving a little :D

    Hand signals procedure

Wow, thanks for all your replies. Interesting - the signal we were taught is the "shrug" symbol - both hands to the sides, palms ups. I guess thats just more reason to discuss on the boat before hand, as has been suggested.

    Hand signals procedure

Lets say your buddy wants to call the dive. He gives you the thumbs up signal to ascend. What is the correct procedure then? We were taught to give the OK first (indicating we are fine) and then the thumbs up to indcate we are complying with the plan. However, when I did this to my (new)...

    Wetsuit Fit

I'm glad Greg posted this question. I am tall (6ft 2) and *very* skinny - underweight by all accounts. If I use a normal size wetsuit the arms are legs are not tight, meaning seawater gets in whever I move and I get very cold very quickly (even in 30C water!). I found a wetsuit that had...

    Zanzibar - Stone Town

I did my OW training with One Ocean Divers in Stone Town. My friends have also done several dives with them since our training and none of us have ever had any complaints. They are right at the sea front, next to Sweet Eazy resturant.

    Diving Lake Malawi & Schistosomiasis

Also, the snails that harbour this parasite only live in the water along the shoreline, so as long as you are making a boat dive you should be pretty much safe.

    pemba island

Re: Pemba in Tanzania Well at present the rains have just started here; by June they may or may not have finished. If they haven't you can expect reduced visibility (in fine weather it is normally 20m). IIRC the water temp when we dived last May was about 25-26C, on the tail end of the rainy...

    Diving in Malindi Kenya

Welcome :) I have dived at several places around Kenya. I have only ever snorkelled at Malindi but at the same site diving was taking place. The snorkelling was quite interesting with a wide variety of coral and fish life. I can't tell you about the rates unfortunately. If you get a chance...

    Terrible headache after diving

Thanks everyone for your advice - my friends also kicked my butt when they realised I hadn't sought medical assistance. They (and you) are right - it was stupid not to. I am actually reevaluating my diving since as I said before, finding a doctor and a well equipped hospital in Tanzania is...

    Diving Zanzibar!

I was lucky enough to do my ceritifcation here :) We went with One Ocean (www.zanzibaroneocean.com) divers on Zanzibar island. I found them very helpful and patient during my certification but bear in mind I don't have much experience of dive outfits. IIRC it costs about 60 USD for a day (two...

    Terrible headache after diving

I don't belong to DAN. Perhaps I should; I will check them out first thing in the morning. Actually this experience opened my eyes somewhat: I really need to find a doctor with good knowledge of diving medicine in case the worst happens. It has also occured to me that the nearest...

    Terrible headache after diving

Thanks. I am actually planning to get fully checked out by a doctor with diving knowledge before I dive again, but finding such a person in this country is not easy.
