Guppie nearly all of my diving is coldwater, (except for shallow summer stuff and vacations). For years I used Sherwood regs which worked fine in the cold stuff, (anything above the Magnum level), but now I have gone on to Zeagle regs. They offer excellent thermal protection in a high-performance regulator.

Recently I've bought Mares Proton Ice. Do anybody could tell me is this a right choise for cold water (about 3-9 degree Celsius)?

Anyone know if there is a DIN kit for these?
Yes, you can buy it at LeisurePro. Or you can buy the DIN regulator at DiveInn.

Have a Scubapro, its a good regulator. I've been diving in cold water and have Apeks specifically for colder temps.

Spent the 1st 18 years of life in Kalamazoo, MI, the next 10 years in Ann Arbor, and now I'm in Nashville.

Jim,
I'm surprised you didn't mention Huron Scuba in Ann Arbor. That's the shop I use and am very happy with. And how about those Spartans? My wife is a spartan, but I happily won a 30 min. massage off of that game.

Guppie,
For what it's worth I had the same regulator concerns/questions - dive in MI but want an all purpose reg good in warm water. Based on all the advice on this board, my decision was between the Aqualung Legend LX and Apeks ATX200 (or ATX50) - I just bought the Apeks but have yet to use it.

I considered the SP mk16/S550 but I think the enviromental seal on the above choices is at bare minimum more convenient. Poseiden regs are somewhat harsh in shallow waters. Looked at the Mares Proton Ice and Atomic M1 but they were not offering as good of a warranty (no "free parts for life").

I'm a relatively new and inexperienced diver so I put a lot of faith in other's experiences and advice (a lot from this board). I've heard nothing but good things about Apeks and that pushed me in that direction. I believe that Aqualung (which owns Apeks) offers free parts for life and so does Scubapro - that was one consideration for me. Also, Huron Scuba in Ann Arbor offers half off service/labor on regs (once you've spent $1000 cumulative in their store).

I fully agree. If Huron Scuba is close, it's a great shop. If he's in SW Michigan west of Battle Creek, I think Rick Sass runs a top-notch operation & he wouldn't need to drive another 80 miles east to Ann Arbor.

Point taken.

Thanks all for your advice, guess I'm leaning towards the Apex's now. Sounds like I can't go wrong with them.

I live in GR but work in Holland so my LDS is Ocean Sands in Holland. I have yet to goto a GR dive shop but will this off season.

Hi Guppie

I raised the same issues in August when I was shopping for my regulator, and I basically received very similar responses i.e. lots of people were pro Apex.

I was also very interested in ScubaPro, but choose Apex not only because it was cheaper, but mostly because it has a better reputation in cold water. This was not only attested by many people on ScubaBoard, but also by the staff at the local shops, who tend to specialise in cold water regs. The Alpine lakes around here drop to aprox 3C (37.4F) when you go below 16M (52.5 Feet) even in the height of the summer. Some of the best spots feel almost that cold at the surface.

I just used my Apex 40 regulator for the first time while on a dive holiday last month, and loved it. I tested other regulators too (traded with dive buddies) and liked the Apex by far the best. However, I still really liked the ScubaPro second stage that I tried (R190). It was the only one that was comparable to the Apex. It was very smooth, perhaps even slightly smoother than mine. I don’t know it’s reputation in cold water though, but I do know that Apex’s cold water reputation is excellent. I’m quite confident in my recent purchase, and you should be too.

All the best

Sylvie
