These regs are incredibly easy to self service. No reason not to learn how to do it yourself.

I would love to but unless they developed an online course I'm not sure how long it would be before I could get certified and what happens if my goat needs a rebuild before that? With their direct no middleman sales I doubt there would be a deep 6 dealer nearby to use or to provide training.

Trust me I wouldn't want to upset a man of your dimensions.

The original draft of my post was prefaced with something like "As a new diver and new forum member, I'm half expecting to be told I don't know anything..." but I decided to leave that out and give ScubaBoard the benefit of the doubt. I actually did a lot of research, which is why I went with Deep 6. I consider it an investment both in terms of gear, and in terms of trying to shift an industry's paradigm. I know the o-ring thing isn't a big deal in itself. What it boils down to is that Deep 6 sounds like it's supposed to be founded on openness and directness, so it especially bugged me that I wasn't given all the info up front, and that I later found out about the issue through rumor. I think there's room for improvement there, and my post was meant to be constructive. That said, I do think it's good what Chris is offering to do for everyone who bought his regs. I don't really want to return my regs. What I really want is to start diving.

Hey Plummet. To give you the benefit of the doubt, I'll assume that you don't have a lot of experience with the dive industry in general.

EVERY other manufacturer in this situation, as I have experienced it in 16 years of diving:

    1. Dont find out because they don't particularly pay attention to non-lawsuit type failures and this would almost never be reported (I am not sure I would have reported it, I would have assumed I had the wrong o-ring in)
    2. Once discovered that it was a common part to other manufacturers, ignored it totally. If queried, "its an industry wide issue sorry"
    3. When finally pressed, may have quietly sent out a couple of parts to the loudest complainers or to service centers for stealthy replacement during services.
    4. Announced a revolutionary new DIN ring retaining mechanism and sold it as an upgrade with a new color option.

As a non-safety critical issue, I personally have NO issues with Deep6 continuing to sell the regs for the reasons as stated by cerich. Remember, this is not a life threatening issue at all, everyone carries spares of these o-rings anyway as part of the save-a-dive kit (they are the same size as the yoke o-rings right? those fall out religiously) and as a small company faced with this decision at this point of their life, at the highest sales point of the year,

I would have done EXACTLY the same thing. The difference is, I don't know if I would have the testicular fortitude to be as open and transparent about it here.

I haven't ordered my set yet but FWIW, I believe you will get satisfaction from your purchase in a way that few other manufacturers will get you. I suspect that Deep6 is on the right path to become the Shearwater of dive gear.

Ummm, I guess SW is the SW of dive gear? never mind Im sure you know what I mean...

Thanks for the kinder attitude, RainPilot. My original complaint was not at all about service, just about communication, but I guess in retrospect since the off-tolerance part is not even technically broken (let alone safety critical), Chris could have just said nothing (and done nothing). I think at the time I first posted I was worried that the problem might extend to other parts. Also, I know that I sometimes have the tendency to forget about positive reinforcement when focusing on a critique. I sent Chris a PM earlier saying that I might have come across more harsh than I meant to, and that I have no hard feelings towards Deep 6. I'm DIY-minded and appreciate an underdog, and also appreciate Chris going out of his way to try to deliver a perfect product and make sure his customers are happy.
