I was DM for an OW class and it was the final pool session. We do a skin diving final as well as a scuba final and the instructor was doing one last demo of exactly what she wanted the students to do. I was on the surface doing to do the narration once she put her snorkel in her mouth. She said, "We're on snorkels now not regulators so make sure you don't inhale when you enter." then she put her snorkel in and I started the narration. She entered and came up, hand over her head choking and coughing. She indicated she was ok and I was to continue with the narration until she got her composure. I thought she was goofing around, with the exception of the choking the entry was normal. We got all the students in the water and she asked me if she had put her hand over her head when she came up. I said, "Yes, why?" She replied, "Because I told them not to inhale from their snorkel right before I went in and the first thing I did when I got under was take a big breath off mine." She was pleased to hear that even though she was in the process of drowning she executed her skills  The students got a REALLY big kick out of that one LOL!

O.P.:
The bigger deal is when you jump of the boat without opening the tank valve. Happened to me once, I still think I opened it and then close it when I was waiting for my buddy to get ready. Thank god I wasn't doing a negative entry. I can tell you that now I make sure I check it twice.
Op
Done that! Mine was partially open so it was fine until I hit 20 feet. I felt the breathing resistance and immediately checked my depth gauge, I didn't need to check the pressure gauge I knew by feel what was happening and I was ticked at myself. I was so busy cussing about forgetting to turn my air all the way on that my buddy had no clue what was going on, he knew that I was gesturing but not looking his way (I wasn't gesturing to him I was cussing with my hands). He said, "I figured if you wanted air you would eventually ask so I just stayed out of the way." I reached back and turned my air the rest of the way on and had him check it then we went for our dive.

What about descending without a mask?

goofy me!

I have forgotten that I won't sink without weights (twice) :dork:

Shadow:
Have you ever started your descent with your snorkel in your mouth instead of your regulator?

I think a better question to ask is 'How deep have you decended on your snorkel?'

Absolutely, not.....but I can see how it could happen to some goofball divers.
