PADI always refrences the benfits of staying fit and helathy for diving, but always in a rather oblique manner, they never go into the facts and suggestions I love so much (I'm a geek for facts), so I figured I'd ask here.

I like to fetch balls, chase other dogs, etc.

My understanding is that PADI recommends staying fit not necessarily to be a better diver, but to prevent medical emergencies while diving. Complications that are survivable on land (in civilization) can be fatal underwater, or even on a boat far out at sea.

As for becoming a better diver, I think you'll see the most benefit from similar activities, like swimming. Some people like freediving but I figure if I'm already out there, I'd rather be diving. Hiking can probably help a lot if you do a lot of shore diving with longish hikes.
 
You can also mix it up.

For example, these guys are making out on the surface, which requires core strength and balance.

I was trained to keep the head in its natural position for CPR....finning to get altitude to administer each breath. I'm not sure a victim would be getting the full benefit of CPR with the neck turned as such?

What's CPR?
 
Monday: 1 - 2 mile run (easy) or 1600 swim
Tuesday: 2 warm-up sets, then 5 sets of 5 reps of Barbell Squats, Bench Presses, and Bent Rows
Wednesday: 200 run - 400 swim - 200 run x 4 times; or 10 x 200 beach sprints; or 5 x 200, 5 x 100, 5 x 50 beach sprints
Thursday: 2 warm-up sets then 5 x 5 of Barbell Squats and Military Presses, 3 x 5 deadlifts
Friday: 1 mile run or 10 minute run (hard)
Saturday: 600 crawl wearing facemask, 1000 swim in snorkeling gear, 200 buddy tow or 300 rescue kicks wearing fins, mask, snorkel
 
I do a crossfit-inspired high intensity interval / strength training program. That works well for me and provides a good basis for a lot of activities, not just diving.

LOL! I remember when I could run 3 - 5 miles easy. The knees can't take it so I replaced distance with speed. It might be healthier. As a kid, I ran, swam, and lifted every day. Now as an old geezer, I'm smart enough to just do one type each day. Every now and again, I'll do something longer, harder, or all three types of workout in a day. Mostly, at age 48, I just want to keep passing lifeguard tests until I die.

Youngsters are all into that Crossfit, MMA, Spartan races ... basically beating the crap out of themselves. I know. I was young and dumb once myself.

Great pictures, and great actions everyone takes!
I know it's no hard and fast rule, and that anyone of most levels of fitness can take part, but it's nice to see and hear what everyone else does just for their love of diving!

I like that everyone has gone into detail, I'm absolutely a details girl, and loved all of these.
I guess I'll lighten things up and join in a little further...

Of course anything to do with large bodies of water makes me think I should be involved and active, even if I overestimate my abilities and think this is a good idea

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnd my number one. I think every diver should do yoga. I understand it's offputting to a lot of people, and has the label of just being a girl's persuit (which annoys me to no end), but it really is the BEST thing I have found to do to keep me at my best down there. I do LOVE the idea of a diver's yoga class though, that was a great idea!
