I got certified in 2004 at the age of 50.

I am actually now in better shape than I was at age 25.
I am now 51 pounds lighter than when I got certified and I row (on a rowing machine) about 4.2 miles in 30 minutes on a daily basis (except when leaving for diving early in the morning :))

Same here..
Diving was the best health decision I ever made.
I got certified for my 50th birthday. I adopted a whole new lifestyle around diving. Lost a ton of weight (60 lbs) and still losing. I quit smoking, swim 500 yards, row 3 miles and jog 3 miles 3-4x per week. I never could have done that 25 years ago. I'll dive untill I die.

Steve.

I would say when you are dead, you are probably too old.

Seriously. With groups like HSA, there is no reason people can't dive well into their [-]50's[/-] err....old age:D

Thanks, the reason I ask is because I am 41 and considering getting certified. I just want to know how many good years I got left in me.:)

My wife and I jumped in a 48, you're a kid.

If it seems like you need to be a Marine to do this when starting don't fret. With a little finesse it gets a lot easier.

I was on a liveaboard where one passenger was there to celebrate his 80th.

No such thing as 'too old' (ask the 20 somethings I spar with)...

Just stay the hell away from Don Sutherland and his doctor...

Cinematographer/photographer Leni Riefenstahl was scuba diving and taking photos underwater at 100.
Now we're talkin'!
At 60 I'm still strappin' on double 120's, a stage & two deco bottles... It is getting a little harder, and I'll probably drop back to double 100's soon.
There are plenty of guys around cave country who are older than me and doing much deeper, longer and more difficult dives than I am, and I'm workin' on catchin' up.
I'll keep diving until my children lock me up (and after that if I can escape).
:D

On land, I feel clumbzy, stressed and my back hurts. Under, it's the exact opposit. I prefer to ask myself this question... how long will I be able to walk? Add 15 years to that number and that's how long I'll be diving!

Leni would have hit 200 easy if she had stayed away from that diving nonsense. It took 99 years off her life. And Rick, why are you not using a 50-pound rebreather instead of 120 pounds of doubled 120's? The only doubles I will use are LP85's correctly filled to a righteous pressure.

(1) $$$
(2) My 120's are E7's that weigh a bit less than 104's (I have some LP 120's but use 'em as singles with "H" valves)
(3) I have some LP 85's that I dearly love, and they are my favorites and first choice every time if I don't need the extra gas. I do baby 'em on the pressure... no more than about 33.

Actor Donald Sutherland: 'Scuba diving nearly killed me'

HOLLYWOOD, California (2 Feb 2008) — Veteran Hollywood actor Donald Sutherland has revealed how he was struck by...blah blah blah... taken ill after returning to Los Angeles, where he lives, during a break in shooting Fool's Gold – a sunken treasure adventure...blah blah blah..... "It was a big relief, but then the specialist told me I shouldn't have been scuba-diving beyond the age of 50"

Ummm, 9 years for you, then.
