Straight from the SDI Standards and Procedures

11.3 Graduation Requirements
Master Scuba Diver Certification procedures for students:
1. Completion of 4 SDI Specialty Courses or equivalent; only 1 course without dives, may be credited
towards the master diver development program, with the exception of nitrox

2. Provide proof of 50 logged dives
3. Completion of the SDI Rescue Diver Course or equivalent
4. After the previous requirements are met and verified by an instructor, the instructor must issue the
appropriate SDI certification by submitting the SDI Diver Registration form to SDI Headquarters or
registering the students online through member’s area of the SDI website.

Thanks All!
i have 2 specialties with no dives,(winters are long & boring in Canada!) I have the Equipment specialist course and the Nitrox diver course. I'm reading the part in bold & think that I qualify. If I don't, could one of you smart people let me know? I plan on taking the navigation course as time (& monies) permit, so I guess it all works out... Thanx again!

Just out of curiosity, it would be interesting to know how he responds if you print the actual standard and show it to him.

There is a strong possibility that T.C. is right and he's just trying to separate you from your money... but to my way of thinking, there's also a possibility that there's something particular about your case that made him think you need more practice....?!

Either way it's odd, though.

Seems to me that there is a group of people who see it as a reward to themselves for achieving a certain milestone, like celebrating a success.

Some people seem to think it's pointless because they're not wired like that but recognition for an achievement is not a bad thing and if it keeps people motivated, then more power to them.

Just curious, why do you want the Master Scuba Diver card? It really doesn't have much value in terms of education, being allowed to make certain types of dives, or prestige.

Lots of specialties don't give you the ability to do different dives and most give you zero prestige. People want the master scuba diver card because they want it. No one should have to explain why they want it or any other certification.

With Specialties like PADI Zombie Diver, I'm often actually embarrassed to show mine.

You forgot the education part of my statement. Unlike most (all?) SDI/TDI specialty courses that at least profess to teach you something, Master Scuba is not a course at all. The individual courses that are required to get one are the only thing I have seen anyone care about.

…People want the master scuba diver card because they want it...

So you are saying that Master Scuba has no value beyond self-aggrandizement and to collect a fee? Somehow I doubt that was the intent of the OP or the agency. On the other hand, unethical instructors may be so motivated.

… No one should have to explain why they want it or any other certification.

True. However my question was far from a demand. I simply would like to understand the OP’s motivation.

That's the big knock against PADI MSD and gives the NAUI folks and others reason to make light of it. Should be a set list of specs. that add to diver safety and efficiency. But that's been rehashed forever.

Master Scuba Diver is a certification. That's all. No more no less. Some people want the card, for whatever reason, and work towards it.

Nope. Never said that. All I said is that people want it for their own reason. Maybe they set a goal for themselves and that is the proof that they completed their goal. Maybe thy collect cards and want one that says Master. Maybe they're into S&M and like the idea of a card with their name & photo proving that they are a master. Who knows??

True. However my question was far from a demand. I simply would like to understand the OP’s motivation.

Maybe they'll reply...

The possibility of Padi MSD certification encourages occasional vacation divers take a few more courses after their RD certification and they thus remain customers and occasional divers. This benefits Padi. This also gives a long term goal for the tourist, which may be good.

Is it a proof of skill or knowledge? Possibly. Possibly not. But that's irrelevant. There are other courses for that. Naui MSD is better - or Gue fundies... But what do you measure? Trim and efficiency or joy & commitment?

For some people the Padi MSD is one milestone, and a source of joy. Let it be like that. We are all different.

I don't need the Padi MSD or the fundies but they are not worthless for other people because of that.
