I would think that it would be "dee eye are" since it's an acronym for "Doing It Right" as opposed to an abbreviation for a longer word that starts with 'dir' (like 'directory').

But that's just my opinion....

You are correct about how to say it, but your reasoning is wrong. SCUBA is an acronym as are NAUI and PADI. Acronyms are pronounced as words, in fact that's part of the definition of "acronym". DIR isn't really an acronym, they are merely initials like YMCA.
