rigdiver:
I thought that was how to I.D. friendly snakes

Snakes you say? Lots of them around these parts...

this morning, my wife ran into a snake in the garden

and she shouted "come here look at this snake"

i thought ... how Biblical...

It's phonetically pronounced "Duhr", similar in usage like in "No-Duh" --which morphs into "Doh!" many times over when you take Fundies thru Tech & Cave Classes. . .

sorry... i think DIR is pronounced "holy crap, that costs how much????"

In the OP, I asked a simple question of fact.
I tried my best to be respectful of other religions without being fawning.
I'm not DIR or a DIR-wannabee, but there's some interesting stuff I
might want to partially adopt (sorry if _that_ offends) and it would be
helpful, say in a gear discussion at my LDS, to know how to say it.
You know, so they won't laugh at me and call me a dork?

I watched this get hijacked into a poetry slam, but I thought I had an answer
on the pronunciation. Now, it seems that knowledgeble people (based on
their public profiles) have said that both DIR and GUE are pronounced
both spelled-out (like IRS) and "wordified" (like SCUBA). Go reread
the thread; if you ignore the rhymes it's not very long. There is no
longer any definitive answer to my original question.

I would expect that the advocates/practitioners of any methodology
would want appropriate, respectful public exposure and awareness.
The alternative position that "we won't tell you how to say it until
you pass the secret initiation rites" seems IMO to be childish and
counterproductive. I have been known to have a sense of humor,
but I honestly don't understand why the question is perceived as funny.
The fact that we have conflicting answers suggests the question
deserved asking.

I suppose it's possible that different regional groups out of verbal
contact with each other actually pronounce it differently. That in itself
would be an interesting fact, and maybe something World HQ might
want to address.

So, resetting the discussion, and BEGGING to please keep it on topic,
can we get a definitive answer to the OP?

I thought post #2 said it pretty definitively.

If you want a poll, then set up a poll. You say "tomato" I say... well... "tomato" too, but with a different sound :)

I'm of the Dee Eye Are / Gee You Eee camp
